It was necessary to travel through France to reach Andorra. Now France has much to offer by way of scenery, historical cities and fantastic chateaux and much else besides. However, if you are traveling on the modern, fast highways it can be one of the least interesting or exciting experiences. The monotony is relieved only by stops at the various toll barriers as yet more euros have to be handed over for the convenience of using these highways.

With the occasional stop for refreshment and the chance to sample the French version of food for travelers, the day seemed long and arduous. A single highlight was a short stop to take a look at the old walled town of Villefranche. A small selection of photos gives a taste of this quaint place which, like any other, bears signs of its submission to the internal combustion engine:
