Faro

Faro

Situated a little way from the town centre is the Carmelite Church. This was built as Faro did not have an impressive church, something which was considered out of keeping with its status as capital of the Algarve.

The church was built on the site of an old monastery. This meant that the graveyard had to be excavated. The bones were taken up were used to decorate a chapel behind the church as a memorial to the dead monks.
