Faro is the capital of the Algarve and can trace its origins back to the days of the Roman Empire. The town grew up around a thriving port which subsequently was taken over by the Moors who have left their influence on the town’s architecture. Faro does not have a beach in the normal way as the low lying coastline is a wilderness of tidal mud flats that provide a habitat for many birds including storks and flamingos. People travel to the off shore islands by ferry to reach the sandy beaches that are popular there. Only the largest island has a road link to the mainland.
