Cape Saint Vincent is the most westerly point of the Algarve and the south western tip of Europe.
Here high cliffs drop down to the Atlantic and the dramatic landscape was once the backdrop to a monastery where Henry the Navigator planned his voyages of discovery. Looking out to sea from this point one can understand why he was so keen to find out what lay beyond the horizon.
The seas here were also the location of a number of naval battles, notable among them was that fought and won under the command of Admiral Lord Nelson during the Napoleonic wars two centuries ago.
